19th century was the period of Bengal Renaissance. For that Renaissance, a change had seen all around the Bengal. Everyone could realize the necessity of girls' education from then. 'Shrehotta Sommelon' established by the educated youth of Sylhet played a vital role in imparting education.
It was the educated youth who had taken oath to educate the women. In the beginning, the teaching started through home tutoring. Husband taught his wife, brother taught his sister, father guided his daughter. In that way, girls' education began on a limited scale. At that time, Special Sub Register Raj Chandra Chowdhury's learned wife Hemonto Kumari Chowdhurani came forward to educate the women. Leaving behind contemporary superstitions, the legendary woman who was born in 1868 established a girls' school in 1903.
She had to struggle a lot for the establishment. In fact she was enlightened with the charm of rebirth and became the pioneer to educate the girls of Sylhet. Her school transfigured into a established high school in 1924. She was the first Headmaster and Secretary of the school. She was also the Editor of 'Masik Ontopur' which was the first newspaper edited by a woman in Sylhet. Before the Partition of Bengal, she left the country and went to India. She breathed her last there in 1952.
